The new MA Publishing has evolved from this established working base and responds to a cross-sector recognition that the changing landscape of contemporary publishing requires new skills and knowledge. Northumbria Humanities academics have engaged in teaching and research collaborations with New Writing North and Hachette UK for several years.

Our use of lecture capture software will help you revise challenging material. Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) is embedded throughout the course with tools such as the ‘Blackboard’ eLearning Portal and electronic reading lists that will guide your preparation for seminars and independent research. The research of the Institute brings together the disciplines of Art History, American Studies, Creative Writing, English Language and Linguistics, English Literature, History and Media Studies. You’ll also get the chance to work with New Writing North, who provide unique opportunities for creative writers. Publishing students, as part of Northumbria’s Humanities department, have access to the new Institute for Humanities which houses a range of specialist research resources. All Humanities staff are engaged in research and actively create the knowledge that is taught in the department. The Humanities department is made up of a community of learners all the way through from first year undergraduate to final year PhD level. Humanities at Northumbria is composed of three subject teams: History, Literature & Creative Writing, and English Language & Linguistics, and is also developing strengths in the fields of American Studies and Heritage Studies. Please note there is £2,000 scholarship available for one successful student, during their one year degree. Graduates of the MA Publishing will gain a thorough academic grounding in the principles and practices of publishing today, as well as the vocational and practical skills to prepare them for success in a range of publishing-related roles. These modules will help you develop the skills and knowledge you will need for a career in publishing, as well as allow you to graduate with a portfolio to show potential employers and engage in your own independent research project. You will develop professional publishing practice through the year-long Publishing Placement and Major Publishing Project modules. You will develop your understanding of the ecology of writing in the UK through learning about the role of writing development in publishing and strategies for identifying and developing talent. You will also explore the various stages of publishing, from initial ideas and commissioning to cover design, book launches and sales data analysis. You will gain insight into 21st century publishing, and the wide range of roles available in the industry.

Modules you will study on this Publishing masters include, Introduction to Publishing, Manuscript to Market, People in Publishing, Publishing Placement and Major Publishing Project. This Publishing masters course is the first in the UK to offer students a guaranteed placement with a global publisher and the opportunity to work with New Writing North on live writing development projects.ĭesigned to address skills gaps within the publishing industry, our MA Publishing will give you the opportunity to explore all elements of the trade publishing landscape and benefit from cutting-edge industry-inspired learning.
